Setting boundaries is a difficult task to undertake and can stem from a variety of reasons. Some of may come from our upbringing, past experiences and personal beliefs. It takes a lot of practice to acquire the confidence to set boundaries and follow through especially for women and wellness self care. Here are a few reasons why we are afraid of setting boundaries:

  1. Fear of rejection. This could mean that by expressing our needs and desires or limitations will open us up to being vulnerable and the possibility of being rejected by others. We fear it could lead to damage in our relationships.

  2. Desire to please others. I know this is true for me and has hindered me from trying to develop a positive mindset and living a life free from anxiety and worries. We have a natural inclination to be helpful and people pleasing, therefore by setting boundaries we afraid that we will be considered selfish and difficult.

  3. Low self worth. For those that struggle with low self esteem may find it difficult to assert their boundaries as they feel they don't deserve respect and are afraid of being rejected.

  4. Fear of conflict. Because we are accommodating, we are afraid of conflict arising out of our dedication to wanting and needing to set boundaries.

Overcoming the fear of setting boundaries I believe is essential for everyday life. It involves recognizing our own needs along with valuing our own well being. It does take practice because you will need to learn to become assertive while maintaining your personal relationships. It may be helpful to seek support and guidance from a therapist or a coach. But once you learn that it is OK and NEEDED to set boundaries, everyday life can become a lot easier to navigate.
